Are you curious as to how this all started?

Well, it all began when I was around 5 years old (yeah, a while ago!!) in my little pink bedroom in Southport in the UK. My mum was an avid catalogue shopper…

When she had finished with the magazines, I would grab them, rush to my room and cut out things that appealed to me…I’d cut out models, furniture, clothes, accessories, cosmetics, household items, garden furniture, etc. I had boxes & boxes of people and ‘stuff’.

I would spend hours and hours creating scenarios…my ‘people’ were the characters, they had names, personalities, relationships, backstories, homes, and belongings…to me they were real and they were my friends. I would lay out their cut-out ‘homes’ on my bedroom floor and have the characters live out their lives, they would meet each other and interact, I would create dialogue for them, I would know what they were thinking & feeling… and I created situations that they would find themselves in!

This went on for several years…it was a passion bordering on an obsession.

Years later I went on to become a writer for theatre, director & producer. I was being interviewed for a magazine article and the journalist asked me the question ‘When did you start making theatre?’. I had a sudden flashback to that little girl sitting on her bedroom floor surrounded by cut-outs and I realised that that was the beginning of creating theatre…I was casting, creating characters, directing, writing dialogue, and producing…in my own simplistic 5-year-old way!

Now I am creating artworks I realise that I actually am creating in this way again…by selecting images, creating a narrative, using words and layers…my process for creating theatre and visual art is actually incredibly similar. I am amazed when I think back over 50 years to those humble beginnings and realise ‘little Lindsey’ was destined to follow this path of creating for the stage & the page!
